Rwanda has become one of the most stable countries on the African continent in the years following the devastating 1994 genocide. The Rwandan economy has seen an average annual growth of 7%-8% since 2003, which reflects the nation’s ongoing commitment to regeneration and progress. This growth is owed in part to Rwanda’s coffee sector, which is strongly supported by the Rwandan government, international investment, and effective trade rules focused on exporting.

This is Cedar’s second Rwandan lot of the year, as well as the second lot we’ve seen come out of the Rugali Washing Station, located in the Nyamasheke district of western Rwanda. Rugali is owned by the Muraho Trading Company, a Rwandan coffee exporter founded by brothers Karthick and Gaudam Anbalagan. Muraho is dedicated to improving the livelihoods of its partnered coffee farmers as well as the quality of their crop, working closely to support and uplift them in alignment with its core mission: to showcase Rwandan coffee, and moreover the beautiful country it comes from and its vibrant people, on the global stage.

Like the Shyira, this coffee is of the Red Bourbon variety, but differs when it comes to processing. While the Shyira is a washed coffee, this latest lot is a natural, which should be especially exciting given that Rugali Washing Station was actually one of the first two washing stations in Rwanda to be granted approval to produce natural and honey-process coffees. Rugali has a reputation for producing fantastic coffee time and time again, having  delivered numerous lots of competition coffees in the past. We’ve got high hopes for this latest release, which promises big, juicy, fruity flavours in the cup.

Cedar’s notes

“With our previous release being a washed process, we decided to compare it to our new naturally processed lot. The Red Bourbon variety leaves its distinctive berry notes. We found with this lot we got a mixture of fruits reminiscent of a fruit cocktail juice on filter. On espresso we picked up more of a blueberry flavour note. The milk beverage was interesting as it provided notes of a combination of malt and honey – very pleasant.”

Coffee details from Cedar

“Our second Rwandan for the year, but from the same producers that brought us the Shyira. Muraho Trading Company have made it their mission to showcase the fruits of Rwanda's terroir. This time around we highlight the Rugali washing station built in 2016.

“The cherries are hand-sorted before a pre-pulp float. Once sorted and cleaned, they are left to be dried. They are laid on raised beds for 30 days to receive constant airflow throughout the process.”
