Baratza made a splash with the original Encore coffee grinder, a high-quality and affordable device offering home baristas a convenient, precise and consistent way to grind beans for any manual brew method they favoured. The only downside, perhaps, was that we could never recommend its use in making espresso. In fact, the ground floor for a grinder capable of grinding properly for espresso has always been significantly above the price point of the original Encore grinder. Once again, however, Baratza is here to set a new standard. They've re-engineered their classic grinder, not only improving its features for manual brewing but adding the capacity to grind properly for espresso at only a marginal increase in price. This grinder may be just the new point of entry to home espresso we've been waiting for.

About Baratza Encore ESP Espresso Grinder

The Encore ESP includes all the basic features you'd expect of an espresso grinder, as well as all those features that made its predecessor a great manual brewing grinder. The 40mm hardened stainless steel conical burrs are turned by a powerful high-torque DC motor, which Baratza designed to operate at low heat and noise levels. The internal assembly is cleverly designed, with a burr mounting system that makes cleaning the inside of the burrs quick and easy without requiring the grinder to be totally taken apart. This is important as, considering the quality of these burrs, you'll want to be keeping them in good shape!

This user-friendly design extends to the grinding experience itself. Anyone familiar with grinders that are capable of grinding for both espresso and manual brew methods will know just how tricky it is for the designers to get the adjustment mechanism right. When grinding for espresso, the adjustments one needs to make to dial in a shot are incredibly precise compared to the broader adjustments in grind size needed when perfecting a manual brew recipe. We've seen solutions such as two dials in the past or just machines that require users to spend a lot of time adjusting a single dial whenever they wish to move between brew methods. To make things simpler, Baratza has built an ingenious and intuitive solution. The Encore ESP grinder has 40 stepped adjustment settings, and the distance between each of them is non-linear. The smallest 20 settings, recommended for espresso, adjust at a much more precise rate than settings 20 through 40. Effectively, the distance between settings 1-20 is much smaller, while settings 21-40 offer bigger jumps. This allows users to easily dial in their recipes on either side of the spectrum, and simply remember which of the 40 settings to return their grinder to. It's an elegant solution to one of the trickiest problems in making a grinder that serves the full range of brew methods home baristas are interested in, from French press, all the way through the finer ends of espresso.

As for the rest of the grinding functionality, convenience stays a theme. The anti-static dosing cup included with the grinder includes an adapter to allow it to neatly dose into 54mm or 58mm portafilter baskets. The grinder is also designed to minimise grind retention and offers both a switch on the side of the grinder and a "pulse" button on the front to allow users to briefly run the motor and eject any remnants of ground coffee.

Once again, Baratza has pushed the boundaries of the electric home grinder, with a new Encore grinder that promises to make high-quality home espresso ever more accessible to home baristas, while continuing to serve their manual brewing needs for everything including AeroPress, siphon, French press, pour-overs, or pretty much any other brew method you can think of.
