Buf Cafe's story is as inspiring as their coffee is delicious. Despite being widowed in the Rwandan tragedies of 1994, local businesswoman Epiphanie Mukashyaka decided to remain at the family coffee farm and got the local community involved in rebuilding the business. Since then, Buf Café has grown from supporting ~500 local farmers to buying coffee cherries from more than 7000 smallholding farmers in the greater region and has just completed construction of their fourth washing station to keep up with demand. Today, Epiphanie is an integral part of the local community; she offers work and support to thousands of local women in the coffee industry and is an inspiration to countless female entrepreneurs in Rwanda.
The majority of government investment in the Rwandan coffee industry goes towards the development of washed coffees. This means that Rwandan naturals can be quite hard to come by, but when we do find them, they are some of the most spectacular naturals that we get (it was, after all, a Rwandan natural that won Winston Thomas his most recent South African Barista Championship title). Needless to say, we can't wait to experiment with this one and see what sort of brews we get.
If you are curious about coffee processing and its impact on flavour, Origin Coffee Roasting also has a washed coffee from Buf Umurage. Why don't you take this unique opportunity to taste a natural coffee and a washed coffee from the same producer, side by side?
Phaedon’s tasting notes
Rwandan naturals are a bit of a rarity still, so I always enjoy an opportunity to taste one. Sometimes I enjoy coffees equally in many brew methods, but sometimes there's a clear winner, and for this coffee, it was definitely the siphon. Siphon brews brought all the best tangy, fruity, orangey flavours out of this coffee. If you have a siphon, you should definitely give it a try!
