Quaffee is a real specialist in sourcing and roasting exceptional Latin American coffee. This Peruvian single origin is a particularly special example. While Peru has many of the right ingredients for producing top quality speciality coffee including climate, heritage and production volumes, in practice it sadly does not export large quantities. This is mostly due to the fact that most Peruvian coffee farmers operate on a tiny scale and without access to the infrastructure and resources required to produce speciality quality.

Having said all that, this is rapidly changing, and in the last year we've been privileged to sample several top notch Peruvian coffees from several of our roasters. We're particularly excited to receive this one, as it's our first Peruvian microlot: a lot that has been separated and selected because of its particular quality.

Surprisingly, this microlot, selected by Caravela, an incredibly well-respected distributor of Latin American coffees, was actually grown by a fairly new coffee farmer. Maximo Rupay Ramirez only started growing coffee in 2013, but he has clearly dedicated himself to his craft, and already captured attention with the quality of his crops. He runs his farm with the help of his family and we are looking forward to trying the fruits of his labours, particularly as they have been specially selected both by Caravela and our friends at Quaffee.

Phaedon's tasting notes

This Peruvian microlot took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting something quite so delicate or complex in a Peruvian coffee. It's relatively bright, and the acidity was mostly of the citric variety, yet it's not at all overpowering; it's actually very enjoyable. My taste buds detected both lemon and lime. Accompanied by quite a lovely sweetness, those flavours reminded me a little of a Belgian Napoleon sweet (if you've ever had the opportunity to try one). Despite its delicate character, this coffee also has quite a lingering finish, which sometimes reveals a hint of toasted nuts to accompany the sweet citrus flavours.

This coffee is definitely a winner on a pour-over but I also had delicious AeroPress and siphon brews. It seemed to do best with brew times on the shorter end of the spectrum, but it's definitely one worth experimenting with.
