Our friends at Quaffee seem to be on a bit of a new Tanzanian streak. For years, we had no Tanzanian offerings from Quaffee, but then that all changed with the lovely Tanzania Iyela in 2019, and things have been very different ever since. We now are very excited about their offerings from this smaller African producer. They seem to have figured out how to source some of the country's very best.

This coffee comes from the Mbeya region which has a long history of coffee cultivation. It was grown and processed by the Mlukaidiso cooperative, whose 70 small scale farmers follow in the footsteps of their ancestors in the cultivation of small volumes of high quality coffee. Coffees from this cooperative have won many accolades in the last few years, and when you taste this one, you will understand why.

Phaedon's tasting notes

This coffee has left me wondering why we don't drink more Tanzanian coffee in South Africa. Having said that, this may also be one of the best Tanzanians I've tasted in a while. It is bursting with tropical fruit flavours and really reminded me of drinking a tropical fruit juice blend, when brewed right. I specifically picked up mango flavours in quite a few cups, and I also occasionally discerned a bit of raspberry acidity.

On the topic of brewing it right, I would highly recommend filtered immersion brews as your first choice (think AeroPress or siphon) but I also had good results with filter and pour-over methods that favour a long draw down time (think MoccaMaster or Chemex rather than V60). It also makes a very enjoyable moka pot brew!

Quaffee's notes

Thanks to the community’s vast experience, the Mlukaidiso coffee’s demonstrate sweet fruity flavours, accompanied by a light acidity and a good body.

  • Characteristics: A four-star complexity coffee, with stone fruit sweetness with peach and apricot notes.
