Origin Coffee Roasting does an amazing job of sourcing and roasting top-quality African coffees, but they are not just about coffees from the mother continent. On the contrary, Origin has shared some wonderful South American beans with us over the years and this is one of the latest examples. There's a lot to be excited about in this coffee!
This lot was grown on Monteblanco farm in the Pitalito area, which is part of the celebrated Huila region. The farm is owned and managed by Rodrigo Sanchez Valencia and his wife Claudia Samboni. Monteblanco has been in Rodrigo's family for some time with his grandfather having started the now well-established family tradition, which includes growing rather exotic varieties such as Purple Caturra, which makes up part of this lot.
Purple Caturra derives its name from the deep purple colour of the coffee cherries that the plant produces. It's quite a rare variety (one we have not tasted before). You could say that this coffee will give you a chance to try it in its purest form because it is processed with an extended fermentation and a natural-style drying process. The results promise to be very interesting!
Phaedon's tasting notes
Last year's Monteblanco Purple Caturra lot was one of the highlights for many South African coffee lovers, and this new lot may be even better. I absolutely loved it in every brew method I tried it in, and would highly recommend you buy a bag, whatever your brewing tools of choice.
In the cup, this coffee is complex; it has many characters, none of them understated. I picked up everything from grapefruit to blood orange, from raspberry to strawberry, always with a boozy character and mouth-watering sweetness. It's very bright; at times, I found the coffee almost effervescent. It's quite something.
