Our friends at Origin Coffee Roasting have been sharing some fantastic African coffees of late, from many of the different producing countries. You could call this new African release one of the long-awaited classics.
Yirgacheffe is one of the most sought-after growing sub-regions, within one of the most sought-after coffee-growing countries: Ethiopia. You could almost think of Yirgacheffe as the Champagne or Bordeaux of coffee. Although you'll find all kinds of experimental processing methods coming out of Yirgacheffe these days, the reputation was really built on fully washed coffee like this one.
Having said that, we wouldn't call this a typical Yirgacheffe in terms of flavour profile. It's surprisingly full-bodied, and while sweet and fruity (when brewed correctly), the flavours lean more towards tropical than citrus, with a hint of lemongrass for intrigue. We also found that this particular Yirgacheffe seems to love immersion brewing, whereas many of the examples we've tasted in the past favour pour-overs. If the French press or Aeropress are your weapons of choice, this may be the Yirgacheffe for you!
