Since these smallholders lack the infrastructure for processing, they pool their harvests with neighbouring farms and deliver their coffee cherries to centralised Farmers Cooperative Societies (FCS). Kiambu has consistently produced some of Kenya’s most sought-after lots since the very start of its coffee boom. Perched along the slopes of the Aberdare Mountain Range, the factory serves hundreds of nearby smallholders. It takes its name from the Swahili word for airplane, \u003cem\u003endege\u003c\/em\u003e, and is one of two factories managed by the Ritho Farmers' Cooperative Society.
