Whenever the season for Kenya coffees comes around, we also keep an anxious eye on Origin's coffee list. Kenya is one of the big names in African specialty coffee, and our friends at Origin have a knack for finding some of the most delicious lots to share with us.
This particular one is an AA lot; while AA is a screen size and represents the largest beans, it is also considered a mark of quality in Kenyan coffee. AA lots tend to fetch the highest prices, and they often have flavour profiles to justify them. This one is no exception!
The coffee comes from a single farm rather than your more common Kenyan cooperative, which at least theoretically should mean more consistency. The Twin River Estate, owned and run by John Mbuthia Kamau, takes its name from the nearby Chania and Thika rivers which run through an area of Kiambu county that is particularly well suited to coffee cultivation. Its coffees are grown and processed in the same place, allowing for stringent quality control.
Phaedon's tasting notes
This Kenyan coffee is a flavour experience of note; it's unique; it's quirky; it's incredibly bold; it's complex; and it definitely will wake up your taste buds.
I don't often struggle to pinpoint flavour notes, but this coffee kept me guessing. It's sometimes cakey, often jammy, almost always tangy and fruity, and deliciously sweet & syrupy. It has a huge body and a coating mouth feel. There's a malolactic acidity that reminded me of marmalade and lingered on my palate long after my last sip. I caught hints of orange, lemon, quince, brown sugar and even tropical fruit in some cups.
As difficult as individual flavour notes were to identify, the combined effect was just pure enjoyment. I raced through my sample bag in a heavily caffeinated 48 hours. I'll probably be going back for more. If you like bold flavours, this coffee is for you.
