Mexico is a lesser-known coffee producer, especially when compared to other Central American coffee heavyweights like Guatemela, Costa Rica & Panama. In South Africa, we've had a particularly limited range of Mexican coffees to sample but, primarily thanks to our friends at Origin, this is now changing. They have done an impressive job of exposing some of the best that the country has to offer over the last few months, and we've found the quality and variety of flavour profiles quite captivating.
This particular Mexican coffee may leave you wondering why Mexico isn't one of the biggest names in coffee. It's simply stunning. While it's not lacking at all in body, it somehow manages to present its bold flavours in a delicate light. Most pronounced are the syrupy-sweet cherry notes, which will definitely keep you coming back for more. There's a hint of crisp acidity to be found as well that may remind you of green apple, or perhaps even a little citrus.
The coffee is grown on a small, pioneering farm, that has embraced the cause of bio-diversity as well as coffee quality. Fruit trees are grown as natural shade for the coffee crops, using organic farming practices. They have even set up an eco-hotel and visitor centre for those who want to learn more about coffee.
While we could try to make specific brew method recommendations, the truth is that we think this is a coffee not to be missed, whatever your coffee maker(s) of choice!
