Much to our delight, Origin Coffee Roasting are continuing their run of exciting, progressive and delicious coffees from Tanzania. Their latest offering, Tanzania Livingstone, is a fully washed blend of Bourbon, Kent, N39 and other locally occurring varieties.
This coffee, known as the Livingstone blend, comes from the Kimuli Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society. The cooperative lies at the foothills of the Livingstone Mountain Range and has been producing and exporting quality-focused coffees since 1993. With almost 3 decades of experience, their reputation has grown and today they support 9 villages and have 640 members.
Most members own small amounts of land where the family grows the coffee and handpicks the cherries when ripe. The coffee is then delivered to the cooperative for processing; it is actually delivered by all manner of transport from motorcycle to bicycle and some farmers will carry the coffee on their heads and spend the day walking to deliver their beans. The coffee is then expertly sorted, washed and dried.
Phaedon’s tasting notes
This coffee is all tang. From the first sip to the last, the word tangy was always front of mind when I was sampling my bag. Sometimes the flavours were tropical, sometimes more like citrus, sometimes like tart berries, but in absolutely all cases (you guessed it) tangy! It's pretty wonderful.
I enjoyed the tang most in all my paper-filtered brew methods including pour-overs and the MoccaMaster. I also thoroughly enjoyed it in a French press where it reminded me of Orangina (for those who've had the pleasure of having one) and in my siphon where it tasted a little more like marmalade.
Not only is this coffee delicious (and tangy), I also reckon it's incredible value for money. You'd be paying a lot more if these flavours were in a Kenyan or Ethiopian. Grab a bag and enjoy some of what Tanzania has to offer.
