Nicaragua is one of those less common origins that have received a lot of attention from South African speciality coffee lovers in recent years. While the country has a long history of coffee cultivation, political challenges led to its coffee industry falling behind its better-known Central American neighbours like Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama. Thankfully Nicaraguan coffee is back on the menu in SA, and we've often been impressed not only with the quality, but with the unique flavour profiles coming out of the country.
This Nicaraguan lot hails from Finca Idealista and is a special Red Cherry Microlot. It stood out on the cupping table for us right away, thanks to its syrupy sweetness. As it cooled, something different and intriguing revealed itself as well. It's actually a flavour note that we've found in Nicaraguan coffees before, believe it or not: jalapeño! This surprising savoury spicy quality mingles with the sweetness to create a mouth-watering sweet chilli effect.
Our friends at The Portland Project have created a medium/light profile for this coffee which should fair well both in manual brews and in espresso. We'd encourage you to experiment!
