Believe it or not, this is the first Rwandan coffee that we've ever tasted from Rosetta Roastery, despite having worked with them for more than 5 years! Fittingly, this first example for Cape Town's single origin specialists is anything but archetypal.
In the cupping bowl, this coffee definitely displayed distinct grape flavours, accompanied by a subtle malic acidity. We found that in manual brews, the latter came to the fore, and the overall flavour profile was reminiscent of apples - the golden delicious variety to be specific.
This coffee has a relatively muted acidity, and we found that it faired best in immersion brew methods like the good old coffee plunger, as well as the trusty Aeropress. This is not your typical jammy Rwandan, but it definitely is tasty.
Style: Progressive | Black Grape, herbal tea & nectarine-like acidity
Humure's Bourbon seeds are fairly resistant to heat, so we take our time on the turn around, and also don't rush to to get to first crack. But once we're there, we don't linger too long. Development time is only a fraction shorter than our Ethiopian coffees, due to the slightly larger beans.
The Rusatira family's 15 years of experience in the Rwandan specialty coffee scene has enabled them to set up and manage four quality focused washing stations, each in a different Rwandan Province. Humure Washing Station is run completely by women, and focuses on producing washed coffees only. A current focus at the station is on continuing to improve the efficiency of water use during the process of removing coffee cherries from the seeds.
