Colombia is a country that many people associate with coffee production. While it may not produce quite the volume of nearby Brazil, it boasts one of the most sophisticated coffee industries in the world. Like every coffee-producing country, it grows a lot of commodity coffee, but Colombia also has a strong reputation for world-class speciality coffee.

Colombia has many different regions that grow coffee of a very high calibre, each with its own terroir and typical coffee characteristics. One of these celebrated regions, with a name recognised by coffee professionals around the world, is Cauca, where this coffee comes from.

While our friends at Origin Coffee Roasting do many things well and offer us delicious coffees from every part of the globe, we've noticed over the years that they have a particular knack for sharing exceptional Colombian coffees, including plenty of examples from Cauca. We've heard them refer to Colombia as the Africa of South America, and while that may be a geographically questionable statement, it certainly evokes the sheer variety and quality of flavours to be found in Colombian specialty coffee.

Phaedon's tasting notes

This is a quirky coffee, and I'll go ahead and disclose my bias here; I happen to love quirky coffees. Its flavours are not of your run-of-the-mill fruity, nutty or chocolatey variety. There is a distinct herbal tea note in most cups. I thought it was rosehip. Our friends at Origin seem to think it's more like hibiscus. Whatever it is, it's unusual in a delicious way. There's a subtle tannic quality, but it is beautifully complemented by lots of natural, syrupy sweetness. There are also some subtle hints of fruit to be found.

I enjoyed this coffee most in my MoccaMaster, my Chemex, my AeroPress, my siphon, and my moka pot. I think it's going to be a crowd-pleaser.

Coffee details

As one of the most famous coffee-producing regions in Colombia – Cauca boasts a stable microclimate that is ideal for coffee production. The towering Andes mountains and proximity to the equator allow for these prime coffee-producing conditions.

It is rumoured that Piendamo was the first coffee-producing community of Cauca, and still maintains its cultural production. Within Cauca, there are four main coffee provinces, with not only different climates and terroir but also different cultures and traditions. These include the eastern, northern, southern, and plateau province of Popáyan – where this Piendamo lot is collected from. The plateau province is responsible for 65% of coffee production in Cauca, and thanks to the homogenous climate, rich volcanic soil, quality is maintained throughout this region.
