In today’s specialty coffee world, it almost goes without saying that a scale is the most important piece of gear in your brewing arsenal other than your brewer of choice. There’s simply no better way to measure your variables accurately, which you have to do if you want to get any kind of consistency out of your brews. If you don’t know what you’re dosing, you don’t know what to change if your coffee comes out poor, or what to keep the same if you pull off a tasty cup.
Easy to use and with an attractive price tag, Wacaco's Exagaram scale is the perfect entry-level coffee scale, but it lacks some of the cooler features found on higher-end devices. The Exagram Pro is a significant upgrade that still manages to be relatively affordable by coffee scale standards.
Starting with some pretty standard coffee scale features, the Exagram Pro is precise and sensitive, measuring 0.1g increments with the appropriate reactivity for a brewing scale. It sports the all-important tare button and a built-in timer which also features an automatic start function, so you can just focus on your pour. It’s also splash-proof just in case your brewing goes awry, and boasts a USB-C rechargeable battery that lasts 15 hours on a full charge, which takes only 2 hours to achieve. This is a significant upgrade on the original Exagram, which uses AAA batteries.
What’s really cool about the Exagram Pro is that it also measures and displays your brewing ratio when put into “pour-over mode”. By memorising your coffee dose, it will then display your ratio of coffee-to-water as you pour, and Wacaco provides a handy 5-pour brewing guide with recommended ratio targets, such as 1:3 for your blooming phase.
Finally, the Exagram Pro is also more diminutive than its progenitor, making it even more portable. On the whole, it’s about 20% smaller than the original Exagram, though most of this difference is seen in its length and breadth. Regarding thickness, which is especially important when it comes to espresso, the pro is actually only 2mm thinner than the original. This is certainly a meaningful difference, but the Exagram Pro is still thicker than some other espresso scales, and you might struggle to fit it and a cup between your grouphead and drip tray on some machines, depending on your cup size.
All in all though, the Exagram Pro is a significant step-up from its predecessor, and is an excellent and versatile coffee scale in general, especially with its pour-over ratio display. It’s a great example of a high-quality but reasonably priced scale to step-up your home brewing process.
