Believed to be the birthplace of coffee as we know it, Ethiopia is one of the best known and most appreciated coffee-producing countries in the world of specialty coffee. It’s certainly a favourite single origin at Cape Coffee Beans, typically offering delicate fruit flavours and floral aromatics with a pleasantly bright acidity. Ethiopia is also the largest coffee producer and consumer on the African continent, with coffee accounting for about a third of the East African country’s exports.
This particular Ethiopian coffee, roasted by our friends at Origin Coffee Roasting, comes from the Gedeb District and was processed at the Worka Chelchelie washing station. Gedeb is located just south of Yirgacheffe, one of Ethiopia’s most renowned coffee-growing regions, and hence has a similar terroir.
Yirgacheffe is considered by the coffee industry to be to coffee what the Champagne region of France is to, well, Champagne, and for good reason. Thanks to its ideal growing conditions, coffees from Yirgacheffe can be truly superb. They’re often characterised by subtle, complex and deeply flavourful, often offering bright citrus flavours, floral notes and a delicate, tea-like body. They’ve featured on the international competitive stage time and time again, and are lauded by specialty enthusiasts the world over.
This coffee lot comes by way of a single producer, Tanash Girma. Working on her own 1.9 hectare farm, Girma grows several unique Ethiopian heirloom varieties: Kumie, Diga, and Wilsho. Thanks to the shade of various indigenous trees, Girma's coffee grows in a temperate climate which, in addition to the rich soil and high altitude of her farm, makes for ideal growing conditions for her coffee.
