This peaberry lot from Mchana Estate in Kenya is really quite special. It is as delicious as the best of its compatriots, but its flavour profile is surprisingly unique. Rather than bold winey acidity and tart berry flavours, this coffee has a dark, sweet quality, reminiscent of black grapes, blueberries, and occasionally a little orange. The acidity is muted, but not lacking. It's a real joy to drink in pretty much any brew method.
This coffee's different flavour profile is probably influenced (at least in part) by the fact that it's a peaberry, which means that it is a lot comprised entirely of the rare coffee beans that grow alone in their cherries, rather than in pairs. Peaberries are known for their sweetness and more muted acidity.
Of course, there are lots of factors that influence coffee flavour, so it's difficult to pinpoint specific drivers of flavour in any individual coffee. Whatever the primary drivers, we definitely love the flavour of this coffee in the cup!
