Yirgacheffe is probably the most celebrated region in Ethiopia, a country that has a reputation for producing some of the best specialty coffee in the world. Much like the reputation of the Champagne region in France in the context of wine, coffee from Yirgacheffe is prized the world over for its unique qualities.
This coffee comes from the Banko Gotiti washing station in the Yirgacheffe region. Our friends at Origin Coffee Roasting have a long history of roasting coffee from this washing station. In fact, we have fond memories of tasting one of the very first releases at the Cape Town Coffee Festival in 2019. Since then, they have sourced and roasted several lots from this facility and they have always been favourites both within the CCB team and with our customers.
This lot was processed using the washed method which traditionally has been the favoured approach to processing in Ethiopia. Because this method is quite resource-intensive, Ethiopia's smallholder farmers rely on washing stations to aggregate their small harvests and carry out the meticulous processing which leads to the quality of specialty coffee that Ethiopia, and the Yirgacheffe region specifically, are known for. Washed processed coffees are known for their clarity and bright acidity in the cup.
Phaedon's tasting notes
It makes me happy when coffees don't align with my flavour expectations, and this one was just such a case. I've tasted a few Banko Gotiti lots over the years, and so I was expecting something delicate, floral, tea-like and citric. While the broad flavour characteristics I just mentioned are definitely in this coffee, Origin has opted to develop the roast profile a little more than usual, and that has provided more body and sweetness and less of a tea-like drinking experience. Because of that, I actually enjoyed this coffee most in my moka pot, and would expect it to fare well as an espresso, although I haven't tried it that way myself.
