Cedar seems to be having a bumper year with Burundi coffees. Having already spoiled us with three Burundi releases earlier this year, our friends in Woodstock have graced us with yet another. Moreover, like Quaffee’s current Burundi offering, it was processed at Kinama Washing Station, and is therefore the product of Migoti Coffee Company. Believe it or not, there was a time when Burundian coffees were a much rarer occurrence on our store shelves, and it's thanks to fantastic cooperatives like Migoti that they’ve recently become more of a staple. The cooperative buys directly from farmers and seeks to connect them to coffee buyers and roasters all over the world.

In addition to an emphasis on improving the livelihoods of its farming communities, Migoti is committed to accountability throughout the entirety of its production chain. To this end, Migoti exclusively works with microlots, meticulously labelled and separated according to origin to ensure traceability and transparency all the way from farming and production to roasting and consumption. This particular lot, like most coffee from Burundi, is of the Red Bourbon variety, which is known for its jammy, fruity flavours, sure to be brought out by its natural processing.

Cedar’s notes

“This lot tastes a lot more vibrant with fresh fruit notes. On filter we picked up notes of white peach and dried cranberry leaving quite a juicy mouthfeel but nothing too tart. Surprisingly this coffee shone brightest as a milk beverage with a pleasant note of English toffee that we could drink all day.”

  • Cup profile: White peach, dried cranberry, English toffee

Coffee details from Cedar

“We are back at it with another stellar coffee from the guys at Migoti Coffee. Our third release and second year working with Dan and Pontien doing incredible work in Burundi. This year we got to spend time with the guys here in Cape Town as they showcased their projects for the coming years and new lots.

“This time we got to taste coffees from Kigina Hill, which was the standout on our cupping table. This lot has been naturally processed at [Migoti’s] Kinama washing station, where our previous Migoti lot came from. The Kinama Hill of last year was such a hit, with a prevalent note of orange marmalade.”
