Most of Kenya's coffee is grown on small, two-hectare plots by over half a million smallholder farmers. Thanks to the organisation of Kenya's Farmer Cooperative Societies (FCS), producers are able to deliver their harvests to nearby washing stations, known in the East African nation as coffee factories. After milling, Kenya's green coffee goes through highly selective sorting via screen. This technique creates reliable standards across harvests and greater bean uniformity for roasting.

This Karatina Ngunguru coffee is AA size, which is Kenya's largest screen size. It was grown in and around Karatina, Nyeri County, by over one thousand farmers, predominantly from the Kikuyu people. After being delivered to the Ngunguru Factory this coffee was fully washed and screened. Ngunguru is operated by the Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society and has a growing reputation for its washed lots.
