Arguably the most ubiquitous brewer among specialty coffee enthusiasts, the iconic cone-shaped V60 is what truly put Hario on the coffee map. It has remained the Japanese manufacturer’s staple product for decades, with only a few design tweaks over time. While that’s unlikely to change anytime soon, Hario hasn’t been resting on its laurels. The company has been hard at work developing new and exciting items for coffee aficionados to clamor over, and the W60 is one such innovation.

The W60 represents perhaps Hario’s most significant departure from its traditional formula in a long time. While the body of the brewer itself is quite similar to the V60—right down to the spiral ridges on the inside—it introduces an excitingly novel feature: a flat-bottomed mesh filter that rests inside the main brewer. Flat-bottomed brewers typically encourage a uniform coffee bed and benefit from a slower drawdown speed compared to cone-shaped brewers. This allows for a coarser grind without negatively impacting contact time, resulting in a balanced flavor profile with more pronounced sweetness and body in the cup. Additionally, the W60 remains compatible with standard cone-shaped filters if you remove the mesh filter, enabling you to switch between brewing methods as you prefer. This may be Hario’s most versatile brewer yet.

A Note on Mesh Filters

Mesh filters are great. They’re more porous than paper filters, allowing the natural oils and fine particles from the coffee grounds to pass through into the brew. This creates a cup with a richer body and fuller flavor. They’re also reusable, making them an eco-friendly option compared to disposable paper filters. However, some coffee drinkers may prefer to combine a paper filter with a mesh filter for a cleaner cup and a slower drawdown time. Fortunately, with the W60, the choice is yours!
