Uganda's specialty coffee scene is growing rapidly, steadily approaching the quality and output of its celebrated East African neighbours like Burundi, Kenya, and Rwanda. The foothills of Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano, provide pristine coffee-growing conditions. Thanks to the fertile soil and an extended rainy season, Arabica crops thrive in this area. Single-origin coffees from Uganda continue to impress us, and we are excited to share this unique lot roasted by our friends at Origin Coffee Roasting.

Based just outside the city of Mbale, Norman Mukuru and his processing hub, The Coffee Yard, source coffee cherries from smallholder farmers nearby and across the Sironko, Bulambuli, and Kapchorwa districts. This central station receives and carefully dries lots from roughly 578 local smallholders. Norman named this specific coffee Imbalu, drawing inspiration from the traditional rite of passage ritual of the local Bagisu tribe. The cherries undergo an anaerobic natural process featuring an extended in-cherry fermentation before being slow-dried on raised African beds.
