Historically, Ethiopian coffee grown in the Jimma region was only suitable for commodity-grade, sold-by-volume lots. These lots traditionally exhibited a generic dark chocolate taste, typically favoured for blends. Since then, and thanks to increased exposure for the region on the global specialty market, concentrated educational efforts in agronomy, and post-harvest processing, the bar for quality African coffees from Jimma has been elevated significantly.
Grown by an array of smallholder farmers, this particular lot was processed with the washed method at the Beshasha coffee station. It is composed of two Jimma region varieties, whose seedlings were originally selected in 1974 from a ‘mother tree’ within the Oromia region by Jimma Area Coffee Research. As well as being compact and high-yielding, these varieties initially stood out for their disease-resistant and aromatic qualities.
Typically, washed coffees of this Ethiopian variety offer a pleasing balance of bright acidity and floral aromatics. Our friends at Origin have always sourced and shared tasty Ethiopian coffees, offering South African coffee drinkers excellent cups that highlight diverse terroirs. This coffee is no exception; it should reflect the Jimma region’s potential for excellence.

Coffee details from Origin
“Beshasha is a washed Arabica coffee grown in the Jimma region of western Ethiopia at around 2,000–2,100 metres above sea level. It is cultivated from local heirloom and selected varieties by smallholder farmers and processed at the Beshasha wet mill, founded by producer Mustefa Abakeno. The washed method emphasises clarity and acidity in the cup. Tasting notes for Beshasha coffees can include hibiscus, peach, milk chocolate and tangy lemon curd, reflecting the balance of floral and fruit characters with deeper sweet tones.”
