Located in the southernmost part of Ethiopia’s Gedeo zone, Worka Chelbesa is one of the finest coffee-producing areas within the district (Woreda) of Gedeb. Smallholder coffee farmers in and around the Chelbesa kebele (village) grow a diverse host of heirloom crops along the shady southwestern reaches of the Yirgacheffe region. The high elevation, fertile soil, and semi-forested landscape create ideal conditions for cultivating specialty-grade Arabica cherries. Ethiopian coffees from Yirgacheffe in particular are highly-sought after for their expressive cup characteristics.

Built with the support of SNAP Specialty Coffee (named for the processing facility at the Snap Plaza in Addis Ababa) in 2019, the Chelbesa Village washing station maintains a high level of quality and consistency for its coffee production. After harvest, cherries are, in this case, processed with the Red Honey method, where 50 - 75% of the pulped cherries’ mucilage is left on during drying. Afterwards they ferment inside uniquely designed ceramic tanks to enhance both the clarity of the coffee, and the fermentation’s efficiency, thanks to excellent heat retention.

Coffee drinkers with an affinity for Yirgacheffe lots will no doubt flock to this delicious single origin African coffee from Origin. While typical coffees from this region are known for fruity and floral qualities with a tea-like finish, this Red Honey processed lot should offer something unique to try.
