Rwanda is close to many of the biggest African coffee producers such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania & Burundi. It shares many of the same environmental and climatic characteristics of its neighbours which facilitates the cultivation of delicious single origin coffees. Rwanda has become notable for its rural but highly organised wet coffee processing infrastructure which, thanks to strict quality control and grading, consistently meets international specialty standards.

This single origin Rwandan coffee from Origin Coffee Roasting is processed at the Mushaka washing station in the Rusizi district of southwestern Rwanda. Grown at altitudes between 1,650 and 1,800 metres above sea level, local smallholder farmers deliver their harvests to Mushaka before pulping, fermentation and drying.

Our friends at Origin have always offered great Rwandan coffees, and with the country’s particular focus on cultivating the Red Bourbon variety, we have come to expect fruit-forward, jammy coffees with a pleasantly full body.

Coffee details from Origin

“Mushaka comes from the Rusizi district in southwestern Rwanda, near Lake Kivu. This region is part of Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills,” where coffee is grown on steep slopes with volcanic soils and a cool, stable climate that benefits Arabica cultivation.

“Farmers in Rusizi deliver ripe cherries to washing stations like Mushaka, where they are pulped and dried on raised beds to preserve clarity and brightness. Rwanda’s coffee sector is dominated by smallholder farmers who rely on communal washing stations for consistent quality.”
