Ugandan cultivation of both Arabica and Robusta trees began in the early 20th century, and today, coffee production remains one of the East African nation’s most important agricultural sectors. The highlands near Mount Elgon and the Rwenzori Mountains are home to many smallholder farmers who rely on the crop for their livelihoods. There, the high altitude and local terroir contribute to the uniquely favourable conditions that result in the region’s reputation for great African coffee

Gombe coffees are the product of smallholder farmers from across the eastern highlands of Uganda. After harvest, cherries are brought from the highlands to processing mills. This coffee was wet-processed along the foothills of Mount Elgon at The Coffee Yards, run by Norman Mukuru. With decades of agronomy and engineering experience under his belt, Mukuru is a coffee guru who cultivates community among his partners as much as they cultivate coffee. The Coffee Yards is a sprawling compound of raised beds, patios, fermentation tanks, and a pulper large enough to accommodate four containers of cherry per season.

Medium roasted by Origin Coffee Roasting, this Gombe lot underwent a 40-hour dry fermentation post-pulping. It was then thoroughly washed in cold mountain water before being dried on raised beds, and rigorously sorted before export. Composed of SL14, SL28, and Nyasaland Arabica varieties, this coffee has been expertly roasted by our friends at Origin for you to enjoy.

Coffee details

“Gombe is a washed-processed specialty Arabica coffee from Uganda, typically sourced from farms near the Mount Elgon and Bugisu coffee-growing regions. The beans are grown at high altitudes (around 2000–2,200 metres above sea level) by smallholder farmers and delivered to local washing stations such as The Coffee Yards. In cup, Gombe coffees may show flavour notes of black cherry, wine-like sweetness, peach tea, raisins and cacao, depending on processing and roast profile.”
