The majestic Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” stretch 120 kilometres across western Uganda, rising more than 5,000 metres above sea level (masl). Along their slopes, high rainfall, altitudes between 1300 and 2200 masl, and fertile volcanic soils make excellent growing conditions for Arabica coffee. Smallholder farmers in the area typically cultivate their crops on farms of only 1 to 2 hectares.
The cherries of this Ugandan coffee, a Nyabirongo lot from Quaffee, are handpicked and delivered to coffee collection centres. Then they are transported to a central mill in Nyabirongo, operated by Agri Evolve, a UK-based business that works closely with Ugandan coffee professionals. At the mill, cherries are floated, sorted, and dried on raised beds and once dry, they are hulled and graded by experts at the mill’s state-of-the-art facility before being packed for export. Agri Evolve runs the Nyabirongo mill with the help of local agronomists and field officers, quality control technicians, accountants and special projects staff to improve relationships, coffee yields, productivity, and income to uplift the quality of life for nearby farmers, their families, and wider communities.
Sourced with the help of Zuka Green Coffee Traders and roasted with a light to medium profile, this is Quaffee’s second specialty offering from Uganda. We are excited to say this coffee demonstrates a growing trend of Ugandan single origins making their way to our shelves. As with other naturally-processed African coffees, this Nyabirongo coffee should offer a mild acidity with a full body.
