Felicita got its start in the specialty coffee world producing high-end, stylish scales at a surprisingly affordable price. Since then, the Taiwanese manufacturer has gained notoriety for its range of premium, cutting-edge coffee brewing equipment. The F47 is its first attempt at a grinder. It boasts an attractive and uniquely compact design, some impressive features and specs, and a specific capability that’s recently become particularly en vogue in the world of specialty coffee: single-dosing.

Single-dosing is the practice of weighing out your coffee beans prior to placing them in the hopper and grinding, rather than grinding from a large, constantly loaded hopper and weighing your dose as you grind it. This allows you to try out numerous different coffees rather than going through an entire hopper of the same beans before putting in something new. Not only does this let you try out new flavours to the fullest, but single dosing also eliminates the need to store beans in the hopper, which can degrade in quality over time due to exposure to air, light, heat, and moisture. By grinding only what is needed for each shot, you can maximise the freshness and flavour potential of your coffee.

The F47 sports a small, single dose hopper with a capacity of 30g, which is about enough for 400-500ml of filter-style coffee, about two cups. The hopper additionally features a silicone bellows, something which is becoming increasingly typical in single dose grinders. By pumping the bellows, air drives out any coffee in the burrs or chute, significantly limiting retention and ensuring that the flavour of your beans is unaffected by any leftover grinds should you change coffees.

Aside from its single dosing capabilities, the F47 is also a very solid grinder in many other ways. With a set of 47mm burrs and stepless grind adjustment, it can grind effectively for both manual brews and espresso and does so relatively quietly too, though we’d caution against switching between the two too often – making that big an adjustment means you’ll likely have to painstakingly dial-in your espresso all over again. Bear in mind that the F47 achieves its unique form factor, quiet operation and consistency by pairing its 47mm burrs with a low rpm motor, which means that it grinds a little slower than other espresso grinders, though certainly faster than most manual or entry-level electric grinders.

The F47 also grinds into its own included dosing cup, which allows you to easily weigh as you grind, and promotes better distribution when you transfer your grounds to a portafilter. Finally, the F47’s unique, compact cylindrical design actually makes it pretty portable, which isn’t something you can say about many electric grinders, let alone those suitable for espresso. Just make sure you keep the near-2kg weight in mind if you plan on flying with it.
