 We’re big fans of Burundian coffee here at CCB. The small southern African country has struggled to consistently produce high-quality coffee in the past due to socio-political turmoil, but recent years have seen greater stability, and with it the opportunity for Burundi to produce some truly exciting lots and distribute them globally. This particular lot also comes to us thanks to Legado Coffee Roasters via the Long Miles Coffee Project’s Ninga Hill washing station, located in the province of Kayanza, the mountainous terrains of which provide ideal altitude and growing conditions for coffee trees. Long Miles Coffee Project is a notorious coffee producer with a keen eye for potentially excellent terroir and farming communities, and it invests heavily into the livelihoods of the farmers it works with. For this effort and the consistently excellent Burundian coffee it results in, Long Miles is a frequently and highly praised producer. 

Additionally, this coffee is of the peaberry variety. Coffee cherries in Burundi and neighbouring coffee-producing nations are rigorously screened and separated into lots according to size, and peaberries are the smallest category. Because of their uniformity of size and their uniquely round shape, peaberries are easier to roast consistently and thereby achieve significant depth in flavour without compromising on clarity. This should pair excellently with the balance and brightness brought out by washed processing, resulting in delicate but vibrant flavours in your cup.

There's a lot to love about this coffee, even just starting with what's on the label. I've always had an appreciation for the work of the Long Miles Coffee Project, having tasted many of their delicious lots over the years, and had the privilege of meeting and hearing from founder Ben Carlson many years ago. It adds a little excitement for me that this is a peaberry lot, as there were some particularly standout lots of this variety in years past. I'm grateful to our friends at Legado for bringing us some more LMCP coffee to try, and this lot certainly didn't disappoint, despite high expectations.

First and foremost, I really appreciated the clarity in this cup. It was clean, crisp and refreshing in every brew method, with a nice bit of brightness but nothing too overpowering. I picked up a medley of fruit flavours from dried stone fruit to apple, depending on the brew, and I found that my immersion brews were the best at amplifying these tasty characteristics. In the French press, the extra body gave the coffee a jammy quality which made it all the more enjoyable.

What makes it special is that the normally split coffee beans are conjoined and almost perfectly round. This allows for more evenly roasted coffee and denser, more concentrated flavours.”
