Over the years we’ve been treated to some really special coffees brought to us in the form of Origin Coffee Roasting’s Limited Reserve releases. This lot from the famed coffee-producing region of Huila, Colombia, is certainly no exception, in no small part thanks to its renowned genetic heritage. This coffee is of the Gesha variety (or Geisha, if you prefer), a coveted coffee variety originating from Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Gesha coffee trees are difficult to cultivate, but the potential for exceptional quality and unique flavours in the coffee they produce can make them well worth the effort. Gesha coffee is known for its sweetness, clarity and nuance, often offering complex floral and tea-like flavours, and is often seen in competitions.

This particular Gesha was grown and processed on a small farm near the village of Albania, called Finca Renacer. The farm is owned by Alba Ney Fajardo, who harvests its crop herself alongside her husband to guarantee that all of her coffee meets her exacting standards. After harvest, the coffee is washed, and the skin and fruit of the cherry is removed. The remaining coffee seeds (what, once roasted, we refer to as coffee beans) are then left to soak in water tanks for around three days. After this period, if the coffee has reached Fajardo’s desired fermentation point (which occurs due to the sugars found in the coffee seed), it is removed, washed, and then sun-dried for 14-20 days. Fajardo and her team pay meticulous attention to detail throughout the entire process, ensuring exceptional quality befitting a Gesha coffee.
