Mexican specialty coffee is somewhat of a rarity here in South Africa, so we’re always excited when we get a chance to taste some. We’re even more excited when it comes to us via our friends at Origin Coffee Roasting, as we’ve enjoyed quite a few of their Mexican releases in the past. This particular lot was grown on several small, family-run farms surrounding the municipality of San Pedro El Alto in the Sierra Sur region of the state of Oaxaca. These farms are organised under Union San Pedro, a coffee cooperative headed by Salomon Garcia. Salomon established Union San Pedro back in the early 2000s, and has been dedicated to growth and improvement ever since.

In addition to improving the quality of his farms and the yield of their production, Salomon has recently made substantial efforts towards sustainability practices in his coffee producing regions, and improving the livelihoods of the people who live in them. Salomon has been instrumental in the reforestation of the Sierra Sur region, specifically with cash crops like vanilla, cinnamon and cacao, and the planting of and caring for them provides revenue and job opportunities to the local communities.
