Buena Esperanza is a coffee farm found in the mountainous region of Matagalpa, in central Nicaragua. It forms part of the greater Rajuanse coffee estate, and is owned and operated by Ramiro Ortiz and his family who are dedicated to the elevation and advancement of the farm and its crop. To achieve this goal, Buena Esperanza has leveraged the rich environment of the mountain valley where it is found to grow top-quality coffee, and has implemented numerous ecological conservation and environmental renewal measures, with the aid of the local neighbouring communities.

We’ve enjoyed several coffees from Buena Esperanza before, including two this year, and we really feel that the Ortiz family consistently produces some of the best lots of Nicaraguan coffee out there. This coffee is of the Marsellesa variety, an interesting cross between a Timor Hybrid and Villa Sarchi cultivated for its high potential for superior cup-quality and resistance to leaf rust, a fungal disease that can substantially reduce coffee yields and eventually kill affected trees. Moreover, this lot has undergone carbonic maceration, a processing method that involves leaving whole coffee cherries in a sealed environment filled with carbon dioxide. Under these conditions the coffee cherry ferments in unique ways, before it is removed and left to dry with the fruit and skin still on. This can result in complex, intense flavours like fermented fruit, sure to be brought out tastily by our friends over at Origin Coffee Roasting

“Nestled in Matagalpa, Nicaragua’s lush, verdant hills lies Buena Esperanza, a hidden gem renowned for its extraordinary coffee farms. This region, with its fertile soil, ideal climate, and dedicated farmers, produces some of the finest coffee beans in the world. Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or simply a lover of rich, aromatic brews, Buena Esperanza offers a unique and unforgettable experience.

“Matagalpa, often called the “Pearl of the North,” is the heart of Nicaragua’s coffee country. The area’s high elevation, consistent rainfall, and moderate temperatures create the perfect conditions for growing high-quality Arabica coffee. Buena Esperanza, situated within this region, benefits from these optimal growing conditions, allowing it to produce coffee rich in flavour and complexity.

“The coffee harvesting process in Buena Esperanza is a labour of love. During the harvest season, typically from November to February, farmers handpick the coffee cherries at the peak of ripeness. This meticulous method ensures that only the best cherries are selected, contributing to the superior quality of the coffee.

“Once harvested, the cherries undergo a meticulous sorting, washing, and drying process. The beans are then carefully roasted to bring out their unique flavours and aromas. The result is a smooth, well-balanced coffee, bursting with character.”
