It’s been a while since we’ve had a fresh Rwandan lot from Origin Coffee Roasting (not that we don’t enjoy the Gisheke), and longer still since we received one that’s been naturally processed, so we’re really excited for this one.
Like most Rwandan coffee, this lot is of the Red Bourbon variety. Red Bourbon thrives in high altitudes and volcanic soil offered by Rwanda’s mountainous coffee-growing regions, and is well-known in the specialty coffee world for its jammy fruit flavours. These should be all the bolder in this lot’s case thanks to its natural processing, which typically leads to a bolder, sweeter cup than a washed process would.
Horizon Washing Station, where this coffee was processed, is located in the southern part of Rwanda, in the Huye District. After several years of inactivity it was purchased in 2018 by Fidele Ndagijimana, an experienced coffee producer from western Rwanda. Ndagajimana brought a wealth of expertise and experience to Horizon, enabling him to equip the station with vital new production equipment and its workers with best-practice production protocols. In a short amount of time, Horizon was able to begin producing premium coffee, and now provides work directly to dozens of Huye District locals and indirectly to local smallholding farmers.

“Horizon, a washing station just 20km from Huye Mountain, in the Kigoma sector near the small town of Simbi, is one of the most beautiful sites in the Southern Province [of Rwanda].
“The small, 3 hectare area lies at ~1680 masl, in a valley surrounded by steep slopes, with the farms surrounding it at much higher elevations of 2000 masl. Cherries are contributed to the station by 1200 farmers situated within 2km of it.”
