To our best current knowledge, coffee as we know it was first discovered in 9th century Ethiopia, and was being traded throughout the Arabian Peninsula by the 15th century. By the 17th century, coffee had made its way into Europe and gained popularity across the continent. But Ethiopia is where it all started.
For this reason, and the fact that Ethiopia consistently produces some of the best coffee in the world, the equatorial East-African country is especially renowned in the specialty coffee space. Ethiopian coffee is certainly a house favourite at CCB.
This particular Ethiopian lot, roasted by our friends in Constantia, Quaffee, is a washed coffee from Guji Zone. Along with Yirgacheffe and Sidamo, Guji Zone is one of Ethiopia’s most esteemed coffee growing regions, and for good reason. Many top-quality coffees have come out of the Southern Ethiopian district.
Like most coffee from Guji and throughout Ethiopia, this lot is the result of the collective effort of numerous smallholding farmers, rather than one or two large plantations. Farmers typically deliver their harvest to the nearest local processing mill, in this case Siko Washing Station, a mill located in Siko village. Siko Washing Station is partnered with Origin Land Coffee, a medium-volume Ethiopian coffee exporter whose work focuses on providing top-quality specialty coffee to its customers and lasting support to its partnered growers.
