Kenya's coffee industry consistently produces some of the finest lots from the African continent. This is largely thanks to the 700,000 smallholder producers who work alongside cooperative societies to deliver harvests to local factories, or wet mills. Due to Kenya's traditional auctioning system, quality lots fetch higher prices, which in turn motivates the consistent cultivation of high-scoring lots. This community-driven approach is defined by a rigorous commitment to processing and grading, earning Kenya a global reputation for sought-after washed coffees, primarily of the well-known SL-28 and SL-34 varieties.

In Kenya, coffee is graded by bean size through a precise screening system at the dry mill. While this sorting ensures roasting uniformity, it also creates a reliable standard across harvests. The AA grade represents only the largest beans while AB lots combine A and B screen sizes. The third designation, Peaberry (or PB), is a natural mutation where a single, round seed develops inside the cherry instead of two flat ones.

This particular washed AB lot hails from Nyeri County, situated on the western slopes of Mount Kenya. It was grown by smallholder farmers from the Mutheka Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS). Mutheka manages seven of Nyeri County's coffee factories and supports roughly 6,000 growers. The cherries in this lot are handpicked and delivered to Kiandu Factory, near the town of Tetu, on the day of harvest.
