If you’ve ever done the experiment yourself and tasted pre-ground and freshly ground coffee side by side, you’ll know that there’s really no contest. Grinding your beans fresh right before you brew is probably the simplest but most impactful upgrade you could make to your usual coffee-making routine. To do that, though, you’ll need a good grinder.
We love Mylo’s grinders, and not just because they’re designed in South Africa. Mylo boasts a trim range of quality manual coffee grinders suitable for everything from coarse filter brews to espresso (if you’re feeling adventurous), and suitable for everyone, from the budding enthusiast to the heavily invested hobbyist.
The SG2 is Mylo’s latest grinder, and it’s easily their flashiest yet. Like its ilk, it sports a sleek, understated design and it’s made of high-quality durable but lightweight aluminium alloy (though we’d specifically recommend the Mylo Mini if you’re looking for something you can throw into a camping pack without adding too much weight to it). Like the SG1, it has 38mm conical stainless steel burrs, though they’re heptagonal this time around, for added consistency.
Where the SG2 really stands out is in its burr adjustment. The resolution is pretty great, with stepped clicks worth some 20 microns each, which is only a little less fine than the SG Pro, but it’s the adjustment dial itself that takes this grinder up a notch. Once a coveted feature that won 1Zpresso a Red Dot design award, Mylo’s SG2 features an external burr adjustment dial. Not only does this look striking, it also makes it easy and convenient to change your grind without having to detach the catch cup. That sounds like a small convenience, but it’s very appreciated, as is the handy reference guide printed onto the ring. Dialling in has never been so simple.
Other new additions include a magnetic attachment for the crank handle, which is itself slightly longer than on other Mylo grinders, which should make grinding all the easier, even with denser beans on finer settings. All in all, the SG2 is a premium grinder in a pretty package. It’s the current beau of Mylo’s range, and it’s easy to see why.
