The story of the Puqpress is one of our favourite examples of engineering meeting caffeine. Drawing on his experience stabilising massive oil rigs, Dutch engineer Laurens Pluimers overheard a barista complaining about the physical toll of manual tamping. In a single day, Pluimers built a prototype designed to stabilise a coffee bed with the same precision he applied to 10,000-ton sea vessels.

By 2015, that prototype had evolved into the Puqpress Q1, the world’s first commercial automatic precision tamper. In the decade since, PUQ has fundamentally shifted the coffee industry’s approach, taking tamping from an inconsistent human variable into a repeatable mechanical science.
