While Rwanda still faces a number of socio-economic challenges today, the East-African nation has become one of the most stable countries on the continent in the years following the horrific 1994 genocide. Rwanda has seen consistent year-on-year economic growth, and as of 2024 the IMF reports that many of the country’s key economic indicators continue to trend upwards, spurred by the Rwandan people’s ongoing commitment to regeneration and progress, as well as foreign aid and investment.
Coffee plays a significant role in Rwanda’s economy, and has historically been supported by the national government, international investment, and effective trade rules focused on exporting. First introduced by missionaries at the beginning of the 20th century, coffee has since become one of Rwanda’s largest cash crops..
Rwanda’s coffee industry is composed of some 450,000 smallholding farmers spread across the country’s verdant, rolling hills. This particular coffee comes from Muzo Washing Station, run by Baho Coffee. Baho is not only committed to quality coffee but also to community upliftment. It invests in field schools to train farmers, it assists with logistics, it offers seedling distribution and micro-loans to the farmers it works with, and also focuses on empowering women in the industry.
Expertly roasted by our friends at Truth Coffee Roasting, this coffee should offer an archetypal Rwandan tasting experience: high-quality, fully washed Red Bourbon lots are what Rwandan coffee is all about!
Phaedon's tasting notes
Rwanda has built its industry around the cultivation and careful processing of Red Bourbon. When you taste lots of this, it becomes apparent why. Coffees like this are delicious but they're also balanced and pleasing to most palates. You'll find some body in the cup, some sweetness, some fruit, a touch of acidity, but everything is in harmony; nothing is overpowering. That's what I love about these lots.
I enjoyed this particular lot most in immersion brews like my siphon and AeroPress (with the benefit of a bit of filtration). I also made a delicious moka pot with this coffee. I found a bit of malic acidity and even some apple flavours, in most cups, and a nice citrus acidity to balance it out.
Truth’s notes
"A washed Red Bourbon that bursts with flavours of Raspberry, Cola, Maple Syrup, Chocolate, Cinnamon, Clove and a twist of Lime."
Coffee details from Truth
"Baho’s commitment to quality is where they're industry leaders. Hand-picked cherries are floated for density, pulped with precision, and fermented in tanks before an 8-hour soak. Then comes the slow magic: up to 93 days of drying, first in the sun, then in the shade, on raised beds for full flavour development."
