In a world awash with drippers of all shapes and sizes, it might be surprising that Timemore has chosen to release a new dripper design of their own. After all, the Shanghai-based equipment designers are pretty busy revolutionising the coffee grinder space. Does the world really need another dripper? We weren't too sure, but after trying out the B75, we think that Timemore may be on to something.
Unlike Timemore's other Crystal Eye offerings, the B75 is a flat-bottomed dripper. That's relatively on-trend, to be fair, but they have managed to create quite a unique take on this broader form-factor category. The B75 is nominally a 1-cup dripper, but in practice, we found it to be one of the easiest-to-use and most versatile drippers we've tried.
A few design elements help the B75 dripper stand out in the crowd of flat-bottomed filter-brewers. Eschewing the traditional materials and colours, it is made of one solid piece of beautiful Tritan. While that is a plastic, it is an incredibly robust and food-safe plastic, that almost looks like a solid piece of glass. Even better, it stays that way even after many uses as it is stain-resistant.
Perhaps more importantly for us, the B75 Coffee Dripper has three structural elements all of which help to speed up flow rate. Its walls are almost upright, angled at 75° against the built-in base. These walls also feature 20 concave ridges that keep the filter from sticking to them. Lastly, the bottom is almost entirely open but crisscrossed with 10 sturdy ribs that keep the filter in place without obstructing flow. Combined, these features seem to deliver one of the fastest flow rates we've seen on a flat-bottomed brewer which means you can grind quite fine, while avoiding the pitfalls of clogging and over-extraction. You also have less of an issue with channeling because of the very even bed-depth.
Coming back to the question of brewer size, the B75 comes with some teeny-tiny wave-shaped filters which do the job fine, but we'd highly recommend that you actually opt for full-size Kalita or Origami filters which fit beautifully, and sit slightly higher than the upper rim of the dripper. This doesn't just make discarding the grounds and filter after brewing easier, it also allows you to work with more brew volume. Combined with the fast flow rate, this easily allows you to brew larger batches with multiple pours. We made some delicious 500ml batches in our testing.
So why would you want another flat-bottomed brewer? The answer to this question seems to be, because Timemore has made a pretty awesome one. We'd enthusiastically recommend it to first-time pour-over brewers, or aficionados looking to experiment with something different.
