Comandante is easily one of the most recognisable names in the coffee space, having essentially set the gold standard for premium hand grinders. Its C40 remains one of the most popular high-end hand grinders on the market, and the X25 Trailmaster offers the same level of quality in a lighter, more portable package. Suffice it to say, no one has necessarily been clamouring for an updated Comandante grinder, but the German manufacturer’s dedication to innovation has granted us one anyway: the C60 Baracuda. 

About the Comandante C60 Baracuda Coffee Grinder

Comandante’s main aim with the C60 was to fit an even beefier burr set into the same body as the C40, essentially resulting in a faster and more consistent (though less portable) grinder that’s just as recognisable as its predecessor. To put it simply, from its internals to its overall build the C60 Baracuda is the bigger, heavier older brother. Its body and burr housing is actually made from one solid block of steel, which makes it sturdier and more stable and explains why it weighs an entire kilogram. Inside the body you’ll find a massive 60mm set of Comandante’s patented Nitro Blade conical burrs – for reference, the C40’s burrs are 39mm. 

Bigger burrs typically mean faster grinding, and this is aided by the Baracuda’s extended crankshaft, which gives you more leverage to turn its burrs, and a larger wooden hand knob for a more stable grip. The result is increased grinding ease, even on finer settings. 

The Baracuda also features a new GX50 Gold Clix adjustment system, which can make stepped adjustments of about 20 microns per click of the adjustment dial. It’s essentially somewhere between the C40’s adjustment system, which can make adjustments of about 30 microns, and the Red Clix mod, which takes that to 15 microns per click. 20 micron adjustments are plenty precise for most brewing methods. 

Turning to design, the Baracuda’s silhouette is nearly identical to the C40s, but the design itself is appropriately striking. The stainless steel unibody features oblique furrows and a graffiti-esque Comandante logo that gives the whole thing an eye-catching industrial look befitting the powerhouse burrs within.

All in all, Comandante has done it again. The C60 Baracuda is another top of the line hand grinder that is as versatile as it is consistent, with a sturdy and premium feel, precise grind adjustment, and a truly massive burr set.
