Naked / Bottomless Portafilter for Breville (54mm)

This product typically takes 1-2 working days to dispatch

Bottomless or 'naked' portafilters were originally designed as a training tool. Without the obstruction of a spout, it becomes much easier to see what's happening as the water passes through the tamped coffee. This is particularly helpful for diagnosing channelling - a frequent culprit when it comes to suboptimal extractions. It also adds a beautiful aesthetic to the process of espresso extraction.

This bottomless portafilter is specifically designed to fit Breville espresso machines with a 54mm group head such as the Barista Express, Barista Pro or Barista Touch. It is designed similarly to the portafilters that come with the machines including 'wings' in just the right places but without the spouts or bottom to the holder. The sturdy ABS plastic handle can be removed and swapped if you so choose.

This portafilter doesn't come with a filter basket, but you can find one here.

A note on distribution, channelling & spraying

Using a bottomless or naked portafilter can be a humbling experience. If your tamp and distribution aren't exactly right, not only can you get a wonky extraction, you may even experience some spray. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with your portafilter. It, unfortunately, means that there's something wrong with your puck preparation.

Those good old spouts that your original portafilter came with mask those issues, for better or for worse, but now that you've upgraded, you're seeing the naked truth, and sometimes it ain't pretty.

How do you fix it, you may be wondering? Well, it's all about even distribution and an even tamp. You can achieve this without any extra accessories, but we have some tools that might help with the distribution part at least. These will help you make your extraction Instagram-video-worthy and your espresso exceptionally tasty:

For even tamping, there's nothing quite like a Puqpress!
