Coffee plays a major role in Rwanda's economy, with about 400,000 smallholder farmers and their families contributing to production for export. Nestled deep in the East African nation's western highlands, the Nyamasheke district runs along the shores of Lake Kivu and borders Nyungwe National Park. The region provides ideal coffee-growing conditions, defined by high elevations, fertile soils, and a temperate climate.

The Coproca Washing Station is located inside the Kanjongo sector, a high-altitude zone that reaches 1,830 metres above sea level. Previously operated by a local cooperative, Coproca (Coopérative des Producteurs de Café) has since been revitalised under the private ownership of C. Dorman Limited, a company that has exported coffee from East Africa since the 1950s. Coproca works with 603 local Rwandan smallholder farmers to offer exceptional lots and is certified with both the Rainforest Alliance (RFA) and C.A.F.E. Practices.

This is Origin Coffee's third Rwandan release in recent memory. Unlike the typical washed processes we see coming out of Rwanda, this one is a natural process. Coffees delivered to Coproca are immediately placed in water to separate any floating, under-ripe cherries. The cherries that sink are transferred to raised beds to dry for two to three weeks. During this time, the cherries are heaped and frequently turned for even drying and to avoid exposure to excessive heat.
