Uganda is still a relatively quiet specialty coffee origin, especially compared to more famous neighbouring coffee producers like Rwanda and Kenya, but make no mistake: Ugandan coffee can be brilliant. The East-African nation boasts fertile soils and reliable rainfall in its highland areas. Thanks to its volcanic soil and high altitudes, the slopes of Uganda’s shield volcano, Mt Elgon, are ideal for growing specialty-grade Arabica coffee. In recent years, we've seen a lot more specialty Ugandan lots arriving in South Africa and we welcome the opportunity to taste another one.
This coffee, roasted by Origin Coffee Roasting, was grown on Clarke Farm, a 1,500-acre, eco-friendly estate located in Katambale, Kyarusozi Kyenjojo district. It grows many crops including eucalyptus, macadamias, potatoes, maize, mangoes & oranges, as well as Robusta. However, a small part of the estate produces the Arabica that this lot is comprised of, an interesting combination of Pacas (typical to central America) and Bourbon (often grown in East Africa as well as in the Americas).
Founded by Dr. Ian Clarke, Clarke Farm represents the latest in a series of investments by its founder in the development of Uganda. Having previously established hospitals, medical centres, and educational institutions, Dr. Clarke has turned his attention to agriculture because of its importance to the people of Uganda as an industry.
This coffee offers a particularly interesting tasting opportunity because our friends at Origin have actually sourced two lots, identical except in the way in which they were processed. We'd encourage you to try both the washed and honey-processed releases and enjoy the contrast in flavours.
