A good scale is easily one of the most important tools in a serious coffee maker’s kit, and is usually the first item alongside a grinder that marks the beginning of the budding coffee enthusiast’s journey. It’s simple, really: by measuring your ingredients and timing your brew with a scale, you know exactly what you’ve done throughout the process, giving you the ability to easily reproduce delicious results and fine-tune your less impressive brews with precision.

When you’re just getting started your old kitchen scale is perfectly appropriate, but you’ll quickly find that for consistently excellent results not just any scale will do. The main thing is that you need something that can measure in 0.1g increments. This might sound pedantic to the uninitiated, but trust us when we say that the difference between 15.2g and 15.8g of ground coffee can really be night and day.

Most coffee scales also come with a built-in-timer, giving you integrated access to another essential brewing variable: time. For manual brews like a V60 or French press there’s a little more wiggle room with time than with your coffee and water grammage, though for more thorough brewing recipes the ability to monitor your bloom, pour, and immersion times can really take your brewing to the next level. However, a timer is essential for espresso. Aside from directly affecting the taste of your drink itself, your shot time is an indicator of the quality of your puck prep. Without a timer, you’ll never be able to reliably tell if your puck is underdosed, ground too fine, or distributed poorly, even if you’re able to get a consistent volume of coffee each time regardless.

Presso’s scale is perfect for both new and established coffee enthusiasts, and is great for a commercial setting too. It provides precise 0.1g measurements, comes with a built-in timer, and is rechargeable, meaning you never have to worry about springing for batteries. It’s also appropriately responsive, sports an essential tare function, and comes with a silicone heat mat to protect internals from heat-related damage.

Presso Coffee Scale Size guide

Presso’s scale comes in two sizes. The standard model is great for manual brewing, providing plenty of room for your brewer and receptacle to sit on without obscuring the white LCD display. The mini model is more portable, and is also better suited for espresso, fitting onto most machine drip trays. Make sure you pick the right one for your intended use in the drop-down menu.
