With nearly a third of the world’s green coffee hailing from the South American country, Brazilian coffee’s influence on the global coffee market is simply unrivalled. One of its most famed coffee-growing regions, Cerrado Mineiro, was Brazil's first region to be granted ‘Designation of Origin’ for its high-quality, and traceable specialty coffees. Covering 210,000 hectares, roughly 4,500 farmers in Cerrado Mineiro produce an annual yield of 5 million, 60kg bags of coffee beans.

Situated in the northwestern state of Minas Gerais, the region initially saw slow growth for coffee cultivation in the 1970s due to highly acidic soil and a lack of agricultural infrastructure. Today, however, large-scale production of Arabica varieties of both commodity and specialty grade has become more widespread thanks to local developments in agronomy and irrigation.

Whilst the majority of Brazilian coffee is commodity-grade, our friends at Quaffee are always on the lookout for standout gems, like this bag of Eagle Monte Carmelo. Medium-roasted by the Quaffee team at Buitenverwachting, it is the culmination of selectively screened harvests from coffee estates throughout Cerrado Mineiro.

Quaffee’s notes

Coffee details from Quaffee

“Cerrado Mineiro offers well‑defined seasons and mature farming infrastructure. As a result, the region delivers stable, good-quality and clean, sweet [cup] profiles. The coffee we are offering may not be from a single estate, however, it blends selected components from multiple farms within the region. In doing so, it achieves a uniform, recognisable flavour that remains similar from lot to lot and from year to year.”
