Gaggia is best known today for its iconic home espresso machine, the Gaggia Classic, but with over 8 decades of experience in the espresso industry to its name the proudly Italian company has also dabbled in grinders a few times. Its most current home espresso grinder, the MDF55, is a high-quality machine that pairs perfectly with the Gaggia Classic (but also works great with the home espresso machine of your choice, naturally) and won’t ask you to break the bank.
An eagle-eyed coffee enthusiast will immediately notice that this grinder bears a striking resemblance to the Eureka Mignon Specialita, itself a fantastic home espresso grinder. That’s for an obvious reason: the MDF55 is, in fact, made for Gaggia by Eureka, meaning you can expect all of the usual high-quality design and technical features for which the Mignon grinder line has become famous.
The Gaggia MDF55 sports a snazzy and reactive touchscreen display (with single, double and continuous dosing modes), a chunky and easily manipulated micrometric burr adjustment dial, and Eureka’s famous anti-static, anti-clumping system. Add to this a 55mm burr-set made of hardened stainless steel and you’re looking at a top-notch home espresso grinder that works fast and delivers consistent, fluffy grounds evenly distributed into your portafilter (which rests stably in a rubber-padded fork), ready for tamping. These burrs are also perfectly suited for coarser manual brews, and can be adjusted accordingly, though we don’t recommend using this grinder for both on a regular basis. Going back and forth between filter and espresso grind settings can be a massive pain in terms of getting back to your preferred grind setting. The dial is really designed for fine-tuning more than big changes.
Internals aside, the Gaggia MDF55 also rocks a slick design that fits right in with the Gaggia Classic’s aesthetic. All in all, it’s an affordable and eminently reliable espresso grinder in its own right, and also the perfect partner for your Gaggia Classic.
