It's funny how things work out sometimes. One day, you're mocking up a Shopify website while sitting on your couch, with the half-formed idea of selling coffee beans online, and then, 12 years later, you find yourself delivering metric tonnes of coffee beans across the country, not to mention a whole bunch of equipment to grind and brew them with. One might conclude that life can be full of pleasant surprises, sometimes. This blend seems to be evidence of the same thing.

November 2025 marks 12 years since the first orders were placed on this website. It's an anniversary we try to note and celebrate every year. Sometimes there are balloons; sometimes there are cupcakes; sometimes there are special t-shirts even; and of course, there is always coffee.

Last year we worked with our friends at Cedar to release a special blend to mark the occasion and we weren't planning to do the same this year, but circumstances conspired to bring us another fantastic birthday blend. In retrospect, it feels like the right way to celebrate, especially since this is something we can share with our community wherever they are. Let's officially declare this a new tradition, shall we?

How this birthday blend came to be

Keen-eyed customers will have spotted that this co-branded box looks a little familiar. Those with particular attention to detail may also note some familiar components in the blend. A couple of weeks ago, our friends at Quaffee gave us the sad news that their Costa Rica Rita Herrera Honey was coming to an end, as all good things do eventually, which meant that our collaborative Autumn Blend, which included it as a component, needed to follow suit.

We were just about ready to let go, but then those brilliant Quaffers sent us something to try: the same blend except for a significant and serendipitous swap. Instead of Costa Rica Rita Herrera, they incorporated the lovely Peru La Huaca Natural in its place. We tasted this new blend (not yet knowing what the difference was), and concluded unanimously that we couldn't possibly release it as a continuation of the Autumn Blend; it tasted completely different. However, we all agreed that this new blend tasted phenomenally delicious and we realised that fate had conspired to give us a new birthday blend.

So here it is, roasted and blended by our wonderful friends at Quaffee, we think that this coffee, is the perfect way to celebrate our birthday with us. So please, grab yourself a bag; grab one for your friend, too; raise a cup of coffee to us, as we raise one up to you. Most importantly, know that, as one of our customers, you are part of the reason that we’re doing the things we’re doing 12 years on, and we appreciate you. Thank you for your support, and here’s to many more years of great coffee.

For the week of our birthday, this coffee will also be 12% off (see what we did there?!)

Phaedon's tasting notes

This coffee feels like the perfect way to celebrate, at least to me. It's balanced, yet also complex. It's fruity and sweet, but not overly acidic or funky. Its flavours are delicate and light, but it still has plenty of body and sweetness. It's really quite delicious, in pretty much every brew method.

In unfiltered brews like a French press, I find a sweet and cakey quality coming through, perhaps that delicious Brazil Caxambu coming to the fore. In filtered pour-over brews, the top notes are accentuated: a delicate citrus acidity, orange rind perhaps, and bright berry flavours that are no doubt the product of the all-important Peruvian ingredient. It has a lingering finish and some subtle perfumed aromatics.

Happy birthday to us!
