Although we would say that the coffee industry is rife with innovation, most of this innovation goes towards improving long-established ways of extracting coffee: espresso, pour-over, plunger, etc. It's not that often that you see a new extraction method or style of brewer really take hold. There are some notable examples of newer methods that became popular such as the AeroPress or, more recently, steep and release brewers, but truly successful examples only seem to come along once in a decade or so. That's one reason that we were intrigued when we first heard of the Ceado Hoop Brewer.

Ceado is a very well-known manufacturer of high-quality coffee grinders; this is actually their first foray into the world of manual brewers (as far as we know) but it is a reputable company, particularly in the world of espresso, so we were intrigued to hear that they had released this type of device. We were even more intrigued when we first saw it in action (though, ironically, action may not be the best way to characterise this particular way of extracting coffee).

Ceado's goal with the Hoop becomes very clear when you try it for yourself. It's designed to be an incredibly easy-to-use brewer that still provides a good, even extraction, with minimal need for technique, tinkering or significant amounts of accessories (though we'd always recommend a scale). Ceado has dubbed it a radial infusion brewer which basically means that the water infuses through the coffee bed from the sides rather than being poured over the top. As the Hoop also provides a fairly long contact time, this means that the coffee experiences very even saturation and there is no risk of channeling or uneven extraction. This innovative design earned the Ceado Hoop the Best New Product Award from the SCA in 2023.

How to use the Ceado Hoop

Using the Ceado Hoop couldn't be easier. Simply place a paper filter in the Flow Tower, which is screwed into the Outer Loop. Add ground coffee to the Flow Tower and hot water to the Outer Loop, sitting atop a cup or jug, and let time and gravity do the rest. It's that easy. You can see it in action in the video below.

Who is the Ceado Hoop for

First and foremost, the Ceado Hoop is designed to be an easy brewer. You don't need a pouring kettle, fancy pouring techniques or anything other than a way to grind your coffee and measure your ratio. Anyone can use it.

Having said that, the Hoop's knack for natural pre-infusion and easy extraction have made it popular with some veritable coffee geeks and even credible influencers like Scott Rao. While its appeal may be its simplicity, one can easily make an argument that it offers an unrivalled way to get a really consistent even extraction because of the virtually non-existent role of agitation and pouring technique. So, even coffee nerds, may want to give it a look.

Please note that the Hoop tends to create a light & delicate cup of filter-style coffee. If you're looking for something full-bodied and heavy, this may not be your weapon of choice.
