For generations, Colombian coffee was defined by large-scale batches of washed coffees, long favoured for their dependable profiles featuring notes of chocolate and nuts. Grown predominantly on steep, family-run plots, these classic flavours established Colombia as an undisputed heavyweight in global coffee, accounting for half of the nation's exports. Over the last decade, however, a growing movement of innovative local producers has shifted Colombia's coffee narrative from traditional to cutting-edge and process-driven.
Founded in 2018 in the Palestina region of Huila, El Puente Micromill was established to process larger volumes than individual farm mills, to enable smallholder producers to sell ripe cherries at premium prices. Serving over 100 farming families, El Puente takes its name, 'The Bridge' from the footbridge that connects nearby growers to its central mill and the greater, global specialty market.
Historically, individual producers lacked the resources for experimental processing. El Puente removes that barrier by paying its partners premium prices upfront and assuming the processing risk itself. Beyond flavour innovation, focusing on natural processes allows the mill to use 80% less water than traditional washed methods. This lot underwent meticulous sorting, sealed anaerobic fermentation, and slow, parabolic sun-drying. The expert roasting duo at Cedar are no strangers to El Puente's dedication to quality, and we are thrilled to bring their latest lot to you.
Cedar's notes
"This coffee has always been a bomb of flavour. In the cup, we're getting loads of tropical fruit watermelon and cantaloupe are the first things that jump out. On espresso, those juicy fruit notes carry through, with dark plum adding a deeper layer. On milk, think strawberry whirls, sweet, fruity and ridiculously easy to drink."

Coffee details from Cedar
"It's Colombia season all year round. And we have the pleasure of showcasing a coffee we hold very close to our hearts. El Puente was one of the first lots we ever brought into Cedar, helping kick off the journey we're still on today. So being able to bring it back year after year feels pretty wholesome. Somehow, it just seems to get better every time.
"El Puente; meaning 'bridge', takes its name from the footbridge crossing the river near the El Puente processing facility in Palestina, southern Huila. The facility works with coffee from more than 100 smallholder families in the surrounding area, allowing producers to process and deliver their coffee at a scale that wouldn't be possible on their individual farms.
"Once the cherries arrive, they're floated to remove impurities and then assessed for Brix levels. Coffees with lower Brix are fermented in sacks for 12–24 hours before drying, while cherries with good Brix levels head straight to the drying stage."
