By establishing a continuous feedback loop, it ensures that the espresso in the cup matches your chosen recipe, without the need for manual intervention. This smart scale seamlessly communicates with GbS (‘Grind-by-Sync’) grinders to automatically adjust burr distance if espresso shot time, or beverage mass differs from the pre-set recipe. By eliminating the guesswork associated with dialling-in, Mahlkonig’s Sync Scale speeds up busy cafe workflows and maintains flavour consistency so that customers remain satisfied right until closing time.

About Mahlkonig’s Grind-by-Sync system

Grind-by-Sync is a significant step forward for Grind-by-Weight and Grind-by-Time technologies. GbS leverages Mahlkonig’s innovative Disc Distance Detection system with new features like automatic grind size adjustments and electronic zero calibration. Mahlkonig has enabled grinder-to-machine connectivity via WiFi or USB. Recipe and extraction data are exchanged between GbS grinders and compatible commercial espresso machines (such as select La Marzocco or Sanremo models), or a Sync-enabled smart device, via the Mahlkonig Sync App. This means you can use your phone to set a target extraction time, and if the shot’s volume is too high or low, or it is pulled too fast or too slow, the grinder automatically adjusts burr distance to match the target. This feature removes guesswork, variability, and the recurring need for manual dialling-in for flavour consistency.

How to use the Mahlkonig Sync Scale

To set your scale, first manually dial in a shot using the scale. Once dialled in, set your recipe weight, burr distance and brew time on compatible GbS grinders (ignoring pre-infusion time). Then, enable Grind-by-Sync on your grinder’s recipe menu. Extract another espresso to the desired ratio using the grinder’s auto Grind-by-Sync and the Sync Scale. If the shot timing is longer or shorter than your original programming, the scale communicates with the grinder to automatically fine-tune the burr distance and maintain your recipe pre-set.
